What is an Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)?
EMA is a weekly payment for students aged 16 who are planning to continue in further education from September. There are also bonuses if you remain on your course.
Payments are made directly to your bank account.
Do you want to stay in education next September, but are worried about money?
If you decide to come to Palmer's College from September 2009, you may be eligible to get an EMA.
Who will be entitled to an EMA?
You can get an EMA if you are aged 16 and your household income is less than £30,810.
Will it affect benefits?
EMA is paid in addition to other benefits and support you may be receiving. It will not affect your parent's child benefit or money you earn from a part-time job.
What do I need to do?
You must attend all lessons and tutorials and sign an EMA Contract with Palmer's College. The contract will set out what is expected of you in terms of attendance.
How do I apply?
Further information is available before you finish Year 11 from your school or your Connexions Personal Advisor. You can also contact Michelle Crown, EMA Officer at Palmer's College.
Application packs will be available from April 2009.
