Fun Day Frenzy

14.07.2010

Palmer's student Belinda Muma reports...

Hundreds of students at Palmer’s College soaked up the sun on Monday 12 July and enjoyed a fantastic day of fun, games and laughter all in the name of charity.

The Student Executive teamed up with the Ecuador group to host a superb action packed Fun Day, which included a BBQ on the front field, inflatables, a sweet shop, music courtesy of Gateway FM and a special appearance from the College’s cheerleading squad.

I managed to interview the Student Executive President, 18, Tola Oshunremi.

She said: “The Fun Day is a great way that everybody and anybody can get involved in and give everyone something to remember before they leave as well as raise money for charity. We raised exactly £2504.62 over the year and held many events including speed dating, music quizzes, sweet and cake stores and the Palmer’s Got Talent Show.

“We are all really pleased with the amount raised and hopefully this will help Make a Wish Foundation help a child who is terminally ill.”

Tola and members of the Student Exec have already left College and came back especially to organise this event for the students.

Michael Goddard, representative of Make a Wish Foundation said: “It’s just a marvellous amount of work through simply collecting 50 pence’s, I cannot believe they have managed to raise £2504.62, it is obvious that everybody has had a lot of fun today and the money couldn’t be going to a better charity.

Mark Vinall, Principal of Palmer’s College said: "The Fun Day is a popular annual event for students winding down for the summer after working hard for their exams. I am delighted with the amount raised and would like to thank the Student Executive for all their hard work over the year.”

The Ecuador group of students also used the Fun Day to raise money for their trip. They had a tuck shop and sold sweets, drinks, crisps and cookies in which all sold successfully.

The trek takes place next year and the students have already begun fundraising to help fund the trip. The students are also looking to get more active over the summer in preparation for the big adventure.

Bradley Cooper, Harry Collins, Faye Wheatley, Cyril Leopoloo, Ryan Coombes, Lisa Morrison and Tom Wellban are using this trip to challenge themselves by climbing a 3,000 foot volcano, help the children of Ecuador and help renovate a church or school.

A sponsored run has been arranged by the students and teachers over the summer.

Business Teacher, Bradley Keys said: “I am definitely looking forward to it”.
