BTEC Diplomas (Level 2): Applied Science

 

Why study the level 2 BTEC Diploma in Applied Science?

If you have enjoyed science at school but have not achieved the grades to progress onto a level 3 course, then the level 2 BTEC Diploma in Applied Science will be of interest to you. During the one year course, you will be undertaking practical work in all three sciences.

The course is entirely assessed by coursework, there are no exams. But this is not an easy option. You need to be motivated, organised and keen to find out ‘things’ for yourself.

What do I study?

During the year you will study six units in total:

• Scientific Principles (measurements, materials, animal cells, the periodic table and enzymes)
• Science and the World of Work (we look at an industry that involves Science, eg electricity generation)
• Physical Science Applications (energy, waves and astronomy)
• Anatomy and Physiology (the different organ systems of the body and how they work)
• Plants and Food (the role of plants and how they give humans and animals different types of food)
• Forensic Science Applications (the science behind solving crimes)

Where does the Level 2 BTEC Diploma in Applied Science take me?

After completing this course you could go onto the level 3 BTEC Diploma in Applied Science. This is a two year course which is equivalent to two A-levels. Alternatively you may wish to go straight into science related employment.

What do I need?

In addition to a keen interest in Science, you will need to show high levels of motivation, commitment and initiative plus good organisational skills.
